Originally designed to provide German infantry support in accordance with the tactical concepts Blitzkrieg, Sturmgeschutz III evolved into new and improved versions that had a different role profile over the course of World War II. The encounter with the most advanced and strongest Soviet tanks on the Eastern Front led to a shift in its role from supporting infantry to one of effective tank defense. It was produced in large numbers by the German industry due to its simple and cost-effective design. With the advent of the “G” version, which specialises in the anti-tank roller, the version with a 105 mm howitzer (storm howitzer 42) was also introduced.
